Meera Syal is a British writer, actress and comedienne. Syal has combined her acting and writing ambitions since her studies of English and drama at university. She has written and co-written a number of films, television shows and plays and is a critically acclaimed and respected novelist.
Utilising well-timed comic satire to facilitate her exploration of wider social issues affecting the Asian community in Britain, Syal’s work is given serious weight and gravitas which exceeds her status as a well-known television and radio personality.
Drawing on her personal experiences of growing up in a mining town in Britain, her first novel Anita and Me renders knowable the experience of a young Asian girl growing up in 1970s Britain with comic subtlety and sincere warmth.
Syal is noted for using her fiction to challenge social and political norms and clichés and her work does this in a way which is accessible and profound in equal measure.
