Cider with Rosie is an autobiographical novel of the author’s childhood in Slad, Gloucestershire. The novel documents the decline in traditional rural life under the encroachment of technologies such as the motor cars and the bicycle, opening the world to these previously isolated communities.
The book is divided into themes rather than following a linear chronology and describes a childhood growing up in a remote village. The feeling of the era and the people themselves are excellently rendered in the prose and the world created in the pages is made both knowable and yet strangely distant by Lee’s writing.
